Kevin Johnson is a Los Angeles based artist whose work is rooted in observation, memory, and process. Originally from Chicago, he studied photography, drawing, and painting at Columbia College Chicago before continuing his education at the University of Arizona School of Fine Arts. He also holds a degree in Biology from Northern Illinois University, a foundation that continues to inform his experimental, process-driven approach to painting.

In 2009, Johnson joined Chateau Marmont, where the iconic hotel became both his workplace and enduring subject. Painting from within, over seasons and years, he captures the Chateau with a consistent immediacy resulting in a body of work grounded in lived experience rather than distant observation.

Johnson’s watercolors are permanently displayed throughout the Chateau’s lobby and public spaces, offering an intimate visual record of the property’s atmosphere and rhythms.

His paintings often begin with a fleeting composition—a particular quality of light or the suggestion of a narrative. From there, his process becomes one of refinement: editing, distilling, and ultimately finding harmony within a restrained palette.

Johnson has completed large-scale mural commissions for Spago Beverly Hills, West Elm, CIM Group, and the Four Seasons Anguilla. In 2025, he unveiled Macaulay’s Alibi, a 51-foot public mural on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. His work has been featured in Elle, the Los Angeles Times, Paper Magazine, ALEÏM Magazine, and Kelly Wearstler’s Rhapsody.

He lives and works in Los Angeles.
